Abstract

Introduction. The profession of a journalist requires active development of professional skills while studying at the university. A modern journalist should have the skills of an editor, template designer, photographer, operator and advertiser. The publication of a student newspaper may help to master the basics of such knowledge.

The relevance of the study. Modern university journalistic education in Ukraine lacks practical training. The publication of a student newspaper creates the conditions that are as close as possible to the media activity and allows for the formation of initial practical skills. The purpose of the study is to identify the skills that the publication of a student newspaper forms, to summarize the methodology and technology of this process. Methodology. The study was conducted in two stages. At the first stage (September 2017 – June 2018) the conditions and features of work on the student newspaper were identified by the method of observation. At the second stage, the topics, issues and genre palette of the paper’s materials were revealed by the content analysis method. A classification method was used to describe the results. Results. The educational publishing project allows you to develop practical journalistic skills: the ability to find themes, heroes and experts for materials, writing, editing, text layout, graphic design, writing, re-writing and copyright, maintaining a social media page, editorial management, understanding the needs of the audience, ability to work in a team. The publication of the student newspaper has a specific methodology and technology. Accordingly, it requires specific methods and techniques. Conclusions. The publication of a student newspaper is based on common principles in different universities. This makes it easy to reproduce its methodology and technology under the new conditions.
