Abstract

The aim of this article is to trace the motives and ways of cooperation of Lesia Ukrainka in the St. Petersburg literary and political magazine «Zhyzn / Life», based primarily on her correspondence of this time (1899–1901). Methods. The source analysis of the epistolary heritage of Lesia Ukrainka is used, it is based on the chronological and typological characteristics of the life and creative biography of the writer and publicist; systematization of facts and statements related to the functioning of the magazine «Zhyzn / Life», its employees, the creative plans of Lesia Ukrainka. Methods of comparison, induction and deduction, generalization are also included. Results and conclusions.During the year and a half, 1900–1901, Lesia Ukrainka published 4 literary-critical works in «Zhyzn / Life» magazine; among them are such articles as: «Two Directions in Modern Italian Literature» (1900. N 7), «Malorussian Writers in Bukovyna» (1900. N 9), «New Perspectives and Old Shadows» (1900. № 12), «Notes on the Latest Polish Literature» (1901. № 1); two more articles were sent to the St. Petersburg magazine, but did not get to its pages: «Modern Public Drama» was returned to the author as an imprint with numerous censorship interventions, a review of Hauptmann’s work was lost due to the closing of the monthly and found only 75 years later. The main motives for Lesia Ukrainka’s cooperation with the St. Petersburg monthly were the democratic direction of the magazine, the authority of the authors and employees of the magazine, the opportunity to be a principled reviewer and propagandist of Ukrainian and European literature, and material incentives (after all, the fee in the capital’s edition was higher, which provided the poetess with certain funds for an independent life, it was a shortterm way out of a difficult situation).
